Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Presence

A single player remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
